DIY Natural Insect Repellent

5ml (1t.) Lemongrass (Citronella) essential oil

2-3ml (1/2t.) Eucalyptus essential oil

1 cup. witch hazel or alcohol

Combine all ingredients in a glass or aluminum spray bottle.  Apply to skin, clothing or spray in outdoor living spaces.

Lemongrass is known to be an excellent mosquito repellant. According to a study conducted in 2011, (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3059459/) around 95% mosquitos from a specific range of species were either killed or completely repelled due to the intense odor of Lemongrass oil.

Lemongrass essential oil, also commonly known as the Citronella oil, has an impact known to last for around two and a half hours. For some species of mosquitos, it is even more.

Given these proven benefits, Lemongrass has been touted to be one of the best plants for repelling mosquitos. If you are considering the possibility of using Lemongrass oil topically, it is best to use sparingly and dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil because it can be a skin irritant for some individuals.

Citronella or Lemongrass essential oil is the most popular natural product used as a mosquito repellant.  You have probably seen citronella or lemongrass oil abundantly used in mosquito lotions, mosquito repellant sprays and candles.  Lemongrass oil is also known to repel snakes, lizards, bees, spiders, and rodents.
